A successful Posidonia

Posidonia 2010 was a great success for both the industry and the UKHO

Posidonia 2010 was a great success for both the industry and the UKHO. It’s a significant event on the shipping calendar and this year it attracted 18,000 visitors from 87 nations, with a record 1,859 exhibitors.

For the UKHO, Posidonia provided a further opportunity to talk to the maritime community about the business, operational and compliance issues raised by the fundamental shift in maritime navigation from paper charts to digital technology.

The Admiralty stand was designed to provide live and interactive demonstrations of Admiralty e-Navigator; allowing visitors to see first-hand how e-Navigator helps to make every stage of navigation and fleet management smarter, simpler and safer. We were pleased to see a steady stream of traffic to the stand and received some really positive feedback on the e-Navigator service.

It was clear from our discussions at the event that there is excitement about the digital future of navigation and we received a lot of questions on regulation and compliance ahead of the IMO’s upcoming deadline for mandatory carriage of ECDIS. It demonstrated that the maritime community is really starting to look at their plans for compliance, and prepare for a new era of maritime navigation.

If you’d like to hear more on what was discussed at Posidonia 2010 you can listen to our podcast here. We spoke to a number of representatives from Flag States, Classification Societies and manufacturers about how the new compliance regulations work in practice, how they are enforced, and how ship owners can find the information they need.
